Rathaus - Energy

Stuttgart’s City Hall, located at Marktplatz, is a modern building designed by architect Paul Bonatz. It was constructed in the 1950s after World War II in the understated style of post-war modernism. A notable feature is the tower with the city hall clock, which displays the time, moon phases, and zodiac signs. It serves as the political center of Stuttgart, housing the office of the Lord Mayor and the municipal council. The Marktplatz in front of the City Hall regularly hosts events such as the Stuttgart Wine Festival, the Christmas Market, and the Stuttgart Weekly Market.

In addition, City Hall promotes sustainability initiatives and energy-efficient measures.

Stuttgart’s City Hall stands as a symbol of the city’s efforts to adopt sustainable energy sources. It exemplifies how public buildings can integrate energy efficiency and renewable energy to reduce their ecological footprint.

Thanks to 282 installed solar modules, the solar panels now cover an area of around 500m² on the city hall’s roof. This installation allows Stuttgart to save approximately 37 tons of climate-damaging CO₂ emissions annually.
